5 point patches in HamaPatch 3.0

In this tutorial we'll learn the new feature of Hamapatch 3.0, the 5 point patches.

I hope u excuse my english.

Setting the environment

We need to have installed Hamapatch 3.0 and set up some access keys to make our work more fast and easy. Those keys are these ones.

We'll do the following. Go to Help - Edit Shortcut Key and there we'll choose our favourite access keys for basic transformations. I took these:

  • Shift + t for Translate
  • Shift + r for Rotate
  • Shift + s for Scale
  • Shift + c for Clone

To do it we check the Shift key and then click over the key we want. Then we go to Edit and search the transformation in the menu. The Clone option is at Tool Window - Patch - Clone.

In HamaPatch we can move, rotate and scale the objects for free, but if we want to do it by an exact amount of units, we obviously can't do it handly. To do it we have the Model menu with the last four options, accesible by the access keys we defined before, that will pop-up a dialog box where we can insert the values we want to apply to the transformations.

Modelling

Let's model this:

Sample shape with 5 point patches
Sample shape with 5 point patches.

We have to insert a cylinder with the Model - Insert - Cylinder option. We rotate it 90 degrees around the X axis, then 90 degrees around the Y axis and finally translate it by -1.5 in the X axis to leave it this way. We do it with the access keys we defined before.

First basic shape

Once we have the cylinder at that position we clone it and do an Model - Flip X and we'll get another one at the other side.

Second basic shape
Second basic shape.

To make the third cylinder we need we select the two we have and clone them. Then we rotate 90 degrees around the Y axis and delete the one at the back.

Green points are the selected points. To unselect all we push Enter key.

Once we have the basic cylinders we need another basic shape to finish our 'wireframe'. Go to Model - Insert - Circle(4) and insert a 4 points circle. Then rotate it 90 degrees at the Y axis.

'Wireframe'
'Wireframe'.

With this we can join all points to make the surfaces. The final wireframe must be like this one ...

Full wireframe
Full wireframe (without surfraces).

Now we have to enable the shape so it can use the 5 point patches. To do it we select the points we can see in the next figure and we go to Model - Permit 5point patch and choose the Selected option. Then in the right bar we choose the object and in the vertical Option tab we check Enable 5point patch. We can see the points allowed to use 5 point patches with the Display - Vertex with permit 5 point patch option.

The final object is this.

Good, easy and cheap. Here u have the final object. I accept comments, critics ...
